CCTV at KLIA - is that the cartoon network?

SALAM EVERYONE! Whatever happened to the CCTV at KLIA? After the armed robbery at our state of the art international airport some months ago, there were voices saying that the airport camera surveillance would be improved. Upgraded. Or replaced with something better and more reliable. The voices came from high places, and were heard loud and clear.

But I believe they were nothing more than just that - voices. I had my laptop nicked in broad daylight at around 7.15am upon returning from my Gaza trip. It happened on the Sunday of Feb 8 as I was unloading my luggage from the trolley into my car. A woman of about 45 or so spoke to me in a foreign language, prompting me to stop as I tried to comprehend what she was saying.

After about 10 or 15 seconds, she gestured with her hand as if to say "never mind" and walked into a waiting grey Kancil. She got into the passenger seat on the front while another man slid into the back seat. I believed the man nicked my laptop which I had placed on the back seat of my car whose door was ajar because there were still bags to be put in.

I duly lodged a police report (not that I expect the laptop to be found and returned) and went home. Later in the week I viewed the CCTV (courtesy of the airport management, thank you) and found the recording to be wanting. It didn't show much, except for a Kancil driving away. It could be any Kancil for that matter.

A blogger without a laptop is no good at all. I got friends in the KLIA office but I wonder if they are doing anything about their CCTV network. After the armed robbery, I would think that the priority would be to ensure safety and security of our airport, its services and the people using it.

It is now my believe that the CCTV installed there is best suited to screen cartoon shows for children and airport users including workers while the thieves go about their job merrily. What was it about first world infra and third world mentality?

That's what my 'cikgu' said to me, don't listen to what politician said because it all liars. Maybe when someone use C4 and blew up our airport, then they will do something. But i really sympathies with you. 'Malaysia Boleh'

After reading your article it makes me feel sadden that security is still lax at KLIA. I hope that the authorities managing the airport should be more concerned and improve the whole security setup at KLIA.

Real sad.

The good CCTVs are all used up in Pakatan's bedroom or toilet for any flesh exposure with compilments from the Ministry of Trnasport.

I rarely step out of my corner, but whenever I did, adoii, this place is a huge global kampung, Tuan Pahit Manis.

Semua bangsa dunia punya dalam seem to have converged here. Not a lament, since our ancestors were similarly migrants. Patani plus Home Country, in this case.

I hope MAB will write to your blog promptly explaning this CCTV Buta thing. Since I am a faithful follower of your review of goings on, I have been meaning to ask - kenapa dah lama tak update, agaknya?

I can imagine, someone expansive, charitable, and gregarious (deduced from your writing), would pause to try and find out what this Peruvian ka apa woman was trying to say.

Sekali lagi, Tuan-Tuan MAB sekalian, sila jawab. Tuan Pahit Manis ni ramai kawan. Bad PR ni, kalu you apa semua semua buat leka saja..

Very poor electronic security system
They have to install Intelligent CCTV system , a system that can even analysing the probablity of incident even before the incident occurr
KLIA peoples is not a technical savvy ,most of their staff from Chairman to lower level just a 3 rd grader...

MAHB which has been given a free ride since KLIA opened - they have not been paying the Govt its monetary dues, that's what all that recent restructuring means - has shown it is incapable of managing profitably and efficiently the gaji buta job on a silver platter at KLIA.

They have not resolved problems about flights, baggage mishandling, taxi problems, thefts, roberies and security.

Yes! First world infra, third world mentality and performance indeed!!

It's time the Govt dissolved bodies like MAHB and perhaps - God forbid - subcontracted out the management of KLIA to those like the team at Changi Airport in S'pore.

Now, wouldn't that be something to look forward to!

Even the policemen are not patrolling. They are always chit chatting in a corner. Girl cop with boy cop.
Anyway, the Peruvian thieves must have studied the cctv angles and worked around it.

Well, it happened to me before. A few months after the robbery case in KLIA. I was fetching my hubby in between gate 5 or 6. Since there were too many cars, I could not park by the kerb side, I did a "double park" beside a mercedes, 1 car behind where my hubby was standing. The room between these 2 cars just enough for 1 person to pass through.

I was waiting inside the car. My hubby also cannot push his trolly near my car since so many people with their cart on the kerb side. So he needs to carry all bags by hand, one by one. First he took his golf set and laptop, put outside the car (towards the back). When I noticed this, I went out and take care of his laptop. I waited until he come back with his luggages. At that time, I put my handbag in betweeen the two front seat (dekat celah ruang antara driver & front passenger seat, this is my security measure since I read a lot about people snatched bags from the front passenger seat seat). All car doors were closed tightly since we double parked.

Then my hubby and I arranged the luggages in the boot. Both of us put our heads inside the boot to arrange the extra size golf set. It took only 10-15 seconds. Then I moved to the front passenger seat and let my hubby settled the rest. On the way, I bumped to a lady (about late 40s, wearing a tudung labuh (she didn't look like a passenger at all). With baju kurung and kain which didn't match. She looked surprise when she saw me walking towards the front. I made way so that she can pass through the small lane. Being a habit, the first thing when I came in, I looked for my handbag first. There was nowhere to be found. I looked back to find that makcik, she also disappeared.

Then my hubby realised, this lady was watching his trolly before (when he made 1st trip to send the golf set, and walked back to the trolly, this lady was wandering around his trolly looking for something). Then when my hubby made a 2nd trip to the car, he saw these lady on our left side (between my car and the mercedes, he passed through her, and heard she was talking to another makcik on the other side (outside the driver side). but he couldn't understand the language the were talking, definitely not malay he said.

At that moment I knew, they have taken my handbag. There goes everything. Nothing I could do. Then I approached a traffic police and told him the story. He asked me to lodge a report upstairs and cancelled the credit cards first. urrgghhhh nothing could describe my frustrations (This is the 2nd time, the 1st time - I was pick-pocket in Rome, Italy - in a train by a group of teenage girls). I went to the police and made a report. They said this is the 1st time they heard of such modus operandi and they suspected the makciks were kabayan (few weeks before that there's another case where 2 ladies took a handbag from a passenger near the check in counter). So I asked them to view a cctv. The police asked airport security but the answer is none. There was no record. I just want to see/ confirm who took my handbag.

errrgghhhh ... tension ... masalah lepas tu yang payah. gone 1 day leave to settle new ic, new licence, new credit cards, new so many things and all these come with costs.

Lucky I didnt bring so much money that night (it happened around 9pm somthing, I think - couldt remember the exact time). I lost a coach handbag which cost thousand, a nokia communicator, 1 bunch of house keys (need to change the key since they know the address as well), credit cards, wallets, aaahhh you name it. Lucky my iphone was outside the handbbag.

Now I use a cheap handbag, sling over my body - everywhere. dont care about the fashion anymore.

the last time i was at klia i noticed 2 security/army personnel patrolling the arrival lounge. they were walking side by side but their eyes were not surveying the crowd but busy reading text or sending text on the handphone they had in one hand and their machine gun on the other hand. Talk about alert!

Well, KLIA attracts all kinds. Once I was flying off with some travel agents to Bangkok and while having a smoke outside with one of the travel agents who happened to be Chinese, we were approached by a woman from China. Claiming she had been on holiday in Sabah, she said she had finished all her money and her flight was delayed so she didn't have any money for food. If only we weren't about to fly off...then I'd say we'd have had a fair exchange for the money. Anyway we turned down her request. Another time when I was in the car park, I was approached by an old gentleman who claimed he was from Ipoh and had just sent off a friend. He didn't have enough money for petrol for the journey back because his friend had accidentally taken his wallet. He even gave his mobile number for me to call to claim my money back. I was in a generous mood and my RRM50 and I were soon parted. Since I sometimes donate more than that to other causes, I chose to think that my RM50 had done some good. So Datuk, while I sympathise with your loss, maybe it is fated that you are destined for a faster & better notebook. Welcome back.
