Let's honour Pak Samad properly!

IT'S more than a week since Pak Samad died. After I wrote a piece on an interview he gave to the Malaysian Press Institute a couple of years ago, I realised that that's simply not enough.

I joined many people in paying tribute to Pak Samad, the icon of Malaysian journalism before and after. Some of the articles written by fellow bloggers and journalists about the Old Man of Malaysian Journalism are truly inspiring. They strike a chord in our hearts.

Having said that, I honesty believe that much more should be done to honour Pak Samad. As I said in my article posted a few days ago, Pak Samad lives in the hearts and blood of most journalists. He has that kind of influence on most scribes, young and old, male and female.

Let's start a foundation for Pak Samad, or an institution dedicated to the pursuit of journalistic excellence to give substantial meaning to his legacy. Writing about him, and in rememberance of Pak Samad, is most welcomed. No doubt about that.

Now let's take that higher. I've spoken to a few influential people in and outside journalism. They all like the idea! Wouldn't this be a meaningful way to remember him by, to honour him?

We can start small. We can offer scholarships to students pursuing journalism and/or mass communications. We can even start a Pak Samad School of Journalism to guide and teach talented boys and girls to become probing and devoted journalists, who can stay the course despite whatever challenges or temptations that come their way.

I'll post updates as and when I get something tangible to share. As it is, I'm most encouraged by the support this small idea has generated. If you have ideas to share or suggestions to make, do not hesitate. Write your comments ASAP.

Join me as we seek to honour one of Malaysian journalism's finest and loyal servant.

I fully agree with you Dtk. Maybe like-minded people should sit together for a discussion and some how make it 'official'. Its a brilliant idea in recognition of a great man. Maybe Pak Samad Foundation!

Sdr Pahit Manis,

A grand idea.

Let's start a journalism school/Foundation in his name and dedicated to all great Malaysian journalists.

The school/foundation SHOULD draw on the expertise and experience of retired and senior serving journalists.

We all know that journalism schools of local Universities are too theoretical in their approach.

In recent decades they seem to shun outside expetise, leaving the expertise and experience of many accomplished retired journalists untapped and unused.

This school/Foundation can offer practical courses in journalism and related subjects.

For a start, why don't we compile all the articles written in honour of The Man.

Thank you.

inilah masanya, kalau bukan kita, siapa?

kalau bukan sekarang, bila?

Saudara,

Harimau mati meninggalkan belang, Allahyarham Pak Samad bukan sahaja meninggalkan satu nama besar dalam dunia kewartawanan negara tetapi satu legasi yang tersendiri.

I started my career 39 years ago by undergoing a short course at the South-east Asia Press Centre (SEAPC), Jalan Ampang. Among others, Pak Samad was one of the "teachers".

The SEAPC was moved to Manila and the Malaysia Press Institute (MPI) was established. Maybe the MPI could play a certain role or why not re-name it A.Samad Ismail Press Institute?

Semoga Allah mencucuri rahmat-Nya ke atas roh Allahyarham.

sir,
good idea. why not set up an academy for journalism or something like 'Yayasan Samad Ismail'?

the govt should also consider this.

Is the Malaysian Press Institute still in alive? Well, maybe it could be 'rejuvenated' and renamed the The A. Samad Ismail Center or something.

Saudara, I couldnt agree more. And I also sokong Kadir's proposals. Pak Samad was a great guy, and most of us would see some bits of ourselves in him, but he was too hard an act to follow. Just too good. Sharp mind and people's man. If anyone was God's gift to journalism, I would say he was a chosen one. Maybe the Govt cld chip in without strings attached to get the Pak Samad school/yayasan going. I wish you all the best in this. Perhaps, I could even help.
Salam

school/foundation going. e

Friends,

This is a new initiative altogether. We want to start something fresh. By having a new body or establishment, it can start without having have to carry any old baggages. I've got some support from individuals on this matter and hope to firm up something soon. Please spread the word for me. TQ

Dear Datuk

I am with you. Let us start what you have in mind. We need too sit down and articulate the idea, think about the source of funding and envisage the format of the proposed foundation.

I also like to suggest that we collectively write a book about Pak Samad. We can persuade personalities like Tan Sri Mazlan Nordin, Datuk A Samad Said, Haji Samani Mohd Amin, Datuk A Kadir Jasin, Datuk Ahmad Sebi, Tengku Mohamad Tengku Taib, Shafie Nor, Alias Rahim, Philip Matthews, Lim Thow Boon, Kak Azah Aziz,Zubaidah Abdul Rahman, Hadzrami A R, Cheong Mei Sui, Henry Chang, Ho Sai Kong, Ng Poh Tip, Adibad Amin and the rest (we can expand the lists).

The names above had mostly worked directly under Pak Samad in the NST, Malay Mail and Berita Harian. They have their own perspectives about Pak Samad.

This book could be sold at a very reasonable price and the proceed could be our initial contribution to the foundation you proposed.

How about it Datuk. If you are agreeable, I will prepare an episod when Pak Samad was taken in under the ISA..

Salam takzim.

Sorry Datuk, I suggest we also invite Tan Sri Abdullah Ahmad Kok Lanas to dedicate a chapter in the proposed book.

Don't talk only, do it.You yourself must spare your stamina to make this idea a success. Tell us who are the people you are talking to support this project. What is their pledge?. Don't tarik-tarik tali here.
