I don't know how vaild is the model of family for the anxiety we face. But I guess its as good a start as any.

When we get married, even if we are of very different backgounds in terms of ethnicity, religion, wealth or whatever, what brings two together is some unconscious matching of passions and values.

Here on the other hand, what we seem to have is unbelieveble mix of characters, very foreign to our bones.

There are some fundamental problems in our make up. The most serious one is the non-standardised/multiple school systems, which besides adding to our cost of living, fuels ethnic perspectives and twists every other issue, such that we lose sight of the basics, such as making ourselves competitive in the world. It alo intrudes into other key objectives, such as mastery of English for science and commerce.

Objectively speaking, we don't have any significant issues - we all enjoy access to arts, have freedom of worship, have a functioning democracy, and are technologicaly competent. (By Dr Mahathir's standards, we are behind, but ignore that ideal for now)

But, if you look at the mass media and the PR, we are corrupt, runs by a tyrant, and illiterate because of promotion of Malay language, etc.

Besides the ethnic perspectives, we also have to contend with formal views of freedom and democracy, which are far from conceptions of real, true democracy and freedom.

In trying to trace the roots of our anxiety, I am drawing on Dr Mahathir's decades of successful statesmanship. One other critical feature of his policies was a win-win strategies, not zero-sum games.

Our efforts to fight corruption and promote democracy (we are advanced here) has also been confused by these ethnic and 'worldly' perspectives.

So, coming back to our basic issue of anxiety, it is due to multiple school systems, twisted by ethnic, worldly thinking and zero-sum games.

By the way, the temple issues are not major. We have I think allocations for worship in all areas. Its the illegal mushrooming of temples which are really fund-rasing operations by conmen. We can learn much from the way Singapore controls these.

So, the anxiety is casued not by objective conditons, but the inconsistency between PR's Malaysian Malaysia slogan and the non-standardised multiple school systems.

Should BN try to appease a minority of the electorate and politicians by bending BN's policies such that thay are indistinguishable from PR?

If the BN has courage to call Anwar traitor, it should summon the same courage to see what's fundamentally wrong with our foundation.

Before the next elections, BN could consider surveys or a referendum.

Better to lose the next elections to PR on a matter of principle rather than failing to match them in their duplicity.

-Praxis.

HAHAHA! for a while, i thought you are reallly 52! then i recalled a conversation i had with you and you said you are 58 or something. your email address is a give-away my friend.

I believe you are talking about our beloved nation which turn 52 today! yes, you are right. so many things happening within our country. i wish the PM takes a strong control of things and not allow matters to get out of hand. The PM has been alright so far. Put a few people behind bars and things should be good again.
